Kid Cudi Checks Himself Into Rehab For Depression

Scott Mescudi, better known to you all as Kid Cudi, recently made headlines for getting in a Twitter feud with Drake and mentor Kanye West, putting them on blast for allegedly not writing their own music and forgetting all about him and his career. That’s all over now, thanks to Kanye’s sincere efforts to squash that beef.

Yesterday, however, Cudi came out with an announcement that might explain why he went on that tirade: he’s been battling depression and anxiety for the longest time (“since you’ve known me”), and he’s checked into rehab the other day to get help.

Cudi admits that because of his mental illnesses, he’s been unable to make new friends, “not leave the house,” and trust anyone. Most importantly, he feels that he’s “ashamed to be a leader and hero to so many while admitting [he’s] been living a lie,” which is something someone with depression doesn’t deserve to feel. He says he’s doing this because he feels he deserves to have peace, to be happy and smiling—and that his new music will come out on time, as he made sure to finish it all before checking in.

When you think about it, Cudi’s been hinting toward his condition as early as his breakout single “Day ‘N’ Nite.” Cudi’s mental health issues, and Kendrick Lamar’s as well, could be a possible spotlight on the fact that African-Americans are less likely, due to one reason or another, to seek help for them. And if he empowers more people to get help and help break down the too-familiar stigma of mental health through this move, then he could earn that hero status he feels he doesn’t deserve. We hope the Man on the Moon gets better soon.
