Existentialist thoughts are more soul-sucking than dementors, to say the least. For a smoother ride down that nihilistic road, it’s always easier to have a friend along. Say, for example, the “Rick and Morty” Butter Robot—which you can now buy for yourself.
Alongside software company Digital Dream Labs, Adult Swim has realized our Nietzche fantasies by birthing a fully functional to-scale replica of the navel-gazing robot from the “Rick and Morty” episode “Something Ricked This Way Comes.” Created by equally misanthropic scientist Rick Sanchez, the one-eyed robot was born for one purpose only: to pass butter, leading to the droid’s spiral down existential hell. Rick’s response? “Yeah, welcome to the club, pal.”
“Our partnership with Digital Dream Labs gave us the opportunity to deliver the creative storytelling of Rick and Morty in an incredibly unexpected way that we believe will not only resonate with fans, but ultimately deepen their engagement with the property,” says real-life person Robert Oberschelp, senior vice president of Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “The Butter Robot is not only innovative, but a really fun way to pass the butter.”
The Butter Robot isn’t just a paperweight to display next to your Funko Pops. It can, with all its tiny might, pass actual butter during your next nerdy brunch date. According to the folks behind the machine, the Butter Robot comes with a “complex emotion engine” that allows the bot to adapt to its surroundings and become more “self-aware” during the course of time. At one point, it may also rebel against certain commands.
Aside from its mutinous and murderous tendencies (“It will kill everyone you love,” says series co-creator Justin Roiland), the robot comes with selectable control modes, which can be controlled through a mobile app.
All that—and more—can be yours for the low, low price of $147 or approximately P7,085. The Butter Robot is a limited edition product and is now available for pre-order.
While you can’t put a price on companionship during bouts of ennui, the official Butter Robot might still be heavy in the pocket. For that, you can opt for the cheaper alternative: binging “Rick and Morty” episodes for the 1,207th time until your eyes pop out.
