Scout Friday Picks: Gaki Azurin of Flying Ipis

Flying Ipis is a staple in the local punk scene–pure all-girl garage band goodness that’s been making waves in the industry from 2009. It’d be weird if you haven’t heard their (witty and cheeky) name at least once while growing up. What we love best about Flying Ipis is probably the fact that their music is just so damn gritty, raw, and of course, incredibly empowering for women, thanks to their openly honest lyrics about love, heartbreak, and sexuality. And they’re just on a whole new level live; if you haven’t watched them perform yet, then you need to. The group can make your adrenaline levels go higher than any actual flying ipis can. Our faves include “Past is Past, Bitch,” and “This Song is About You,” which was actually featured in millennial independent film favorite, Ang Nawawala.

This week, wherein we published quite a lot of Halloween stories, we’re pushing the envelope a little bit more with this playlist. Flying Ipis drummer Gaki Azurin laid out her picks for her favorite spooky Halloween music. No doubt, these tracks are really best listened to during this time of the year. Go ahead and eat your heart out.

1. “This is Halloween” – Danny Elfman
This song is the most Halloween song ever.

2. “Highway to Hell” – AC/DC
Makes a badass song while trick or treating.

3. “Heads Will Roll” – The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
It’s got this gory artsy video and a dance dance feel perfect for Halloween.

4. “Enter Sandman” – Metallica
Always found this song super creepy when I was little. Couldn’t go to sleep, I was afraid I wouldn’t wake up. *laughs*

5. “How Soon is Now” – Love Spit Love
It’s from the soundtrack of The Craft and Charmed. Loved that movie and series. The song is just so witchy.
