We suppose it was only logical. If Power Rangers is getting a reboot movie this year, then we guess there’s no reason why we can’t keep dredging up our childhood and put out a Captain Planet movie, produced by none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. It may very well be the thing we never knew we wanted all this time.
Of course, it also shouldn’t come as a surprise that Leo would be behind this. This is a guy, after all, who spent his first-ever Oscars speech this year pontificating on the need to protect the environment. Especially with disasters such as the dying (but not dead yet) Great Barrier Reef.
His production company, Appian Way Productions, wants to work with Paramount Pictures to get the movie made. Sony actually had the rights to a movie adaptation, but a lack of activity on it caused the rights to lapse and become free for the highest bidder again. Scriptwriters Jono Matt and Glen Powell (Scream Queens) are doing the script, and while it’s not confirmed that Captain Planet would also be getting the gritty reboot treatment, there are sources who claim that it’s going to be a Dark Knight Returns-type of deal, seeing the good Captain post-retirement in a world that still needs him. Now more than ever, even.
Let’s see where this one will go, and whether anyone will think of casting Don Cheadle. Meanwhile, take this hit of nostalgia:
