Donny Pangilinan is in his gamer era in new barkada esports-themed film ‘GG’

After being a promising visual artist and a plant shop owner, Gen Z star Donny Pangilinan is about to wear a new fictional hat. This time, his character will give us a peek at his venture into the world of esports.

ICYMI, Anthony Pangilinan Group of Companies’ MediaWorks unveiled their newest film project, “GG” (a.k.a. “Good Game”), in collaboration with Cignal Entertainment. The contract signing was announced by Anthony Pangilinan on Instagram on Mar. 28.

Labeled as “the first full-length esports film in the Philippines,” “GG” tells the story of an aspiring gamer Seth, played by Donny Pangilinan, who gets into a “competitive barkada gaming” while facing a “challenging family environment.”

Going to its cast, “GG’s” headliners are ‘90s teen idol Baron Geisler, veteran actor Ronaldo Valdez, and mother and son Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan and Scout former cover boy Donny Pangilinan—the first time we’ll be seeing them together on screen.

“Sleepless” and “Ngayon Kaya” director Prime Cruz will be directing the upcoming film. Meanwhile, another Pangilinan is also in the team—”Pausecast” host Hannah Pangilinan is “GG’s” creative producer.

“Finally, I can share the reason I’ve been MIA. So blessed to be able to produce this movie together with MediaWorks, Cignal Entertainment, and Create Cinema,” Hannah wrote in an Instagram post.

For now, the other deets of the film are yet to be announced. But in case you’re waiting for another DonBelle serve, Donny and Belle Mariano are also to star in their first television series “Can’t Buy Me Love” this year.

While gaming has grappled with stigma for a long while, the support for esports in the past few years has been growing, making it one of the most exciting industries today. How will “GG” tackle the challenges of a household? Which aspects of the esports community will it zero in on, and how will it flesh out a young person’s perspective? We’ll have to wait until its premiere.
