The long wait is over: “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World’s” anime adaptation has finally been set in stone.
After teasing us last year, we can now say it’s happening. Director and producer Edgar Wright finally spilled solid details of the upcoming series through a tweet with a cast announcement video on Mar. 30.
“After much musing over the years about there being potential for an anime adaptation of ‘Scott Pilgrim,’ I’m thrilled to say one is imminent,” Edgar said in the thread.
Another exciting part of the news is that the original cast of the film will be voicing the characters in the anime series—Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers, Ellen Wong as Knives Chau, Johnny Simmons as young Neil, and Michael Cera as the *notorious* softboi king Scott Pilgrim.
The cast of “Scott Pilgrim” anime series via Netflix
“One of the proudest, most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling the dynamite cast of ‘Scott Pilgrim.’ Since the film’s release, we’ve done Q&As and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the gang on an actual project—[not] until now,” Edgar added.
And of course, the upcoming voice cast has something to say about the announcement, too. On Twitter, Brie wrote, “Hello again ❤️ #ScottPilgrim.” Meanwhile, Chris posted: “BOOM!” In an Instagram post, Audrey said, “SCOTT F#%*ING PILGRIM!!!” Echoed our thoughts, honestly.
Scott is ready to defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes in anime form, which will be created by Japanese animation studio Science SARU. One of their notable works is “Ping Pong the Animation,” the TV series that scored the grand prize at the 2014 Tokyo Anime Awards Festival. They are also the same house that produced shorts for the animated anthology series “Star Wars: Visions” in 2021.
The 2010 cult favorite is based on the hit comic series by Canadian cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley. Edgar, Bryan, and BenDavid Grabinski are the executive producers of the anime adaptation and are set to bring Scott’s world to Netflix.
