Is the MCU finally getting a trans character in ‘Ironheart’?

Cheers to Marvel stans and queer rep all around: DC isn’t the only one doing some big leaps. The MCU could finally be getting its first canon trans character.

The news surfaced when POC Culture cited casting reports for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series “Ironheart,” which calls for an 18- to 22-year-old trans woman of Black, Latina, or Afro-Latina descent.

According to the report, the character is said to be “smart, confident and with a mystical bent and unique sense of humor,” along with a particularly nerdy side.

If all goes well, the unnamed role could stand alongside Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams, who’ll steer the show as the series’ main character. In the OG Marvel comics, Riri is a known teenage genius in the leagues of Iron Man, who, just like Tony Stark, invents one of the most advanced suits of armor in the ’verse. To top it all, the show could reveal her as canonically bisexual—if reports are to be believed.

While the comics debuted its first trans character way back in 1994 with Jessie Drake, the MCU has yet to see a trans character join its long string of heroes. Despite previous conflicting statements on the topic, it’s worth noting that the expanded universe has also seen its first major gay character in “Eternals” and a canonically bi Loki in recent years. If “Ironheart” were to bring in some trans rep, then, hey, it’s about darn time.
