In the much-quoted words of that GIF, shut up and take my money, TV execs, because “Futurama” is returning.
The Disney-owned streaming service Hulu has recently placed a 20-episode order for the sci-fi comedy cartoon, which originally ran from 1999 to 2003 and was revived for Comedy Central from 2008 to 2013. At this version’s helm is series creator Matt Groening, as produced by original developer David X. Cohen.
Apart from its creators, a chunk of the OG voice cast is also set to return. As of writing, actors such as Billy West (Fry/Professor Farnsworth/Doctor Zoidberg), Katey Sagal (Leela), Tress MacNeille (Mom), Maurice LaMarche (Lrrr), Lauren Tom (Amy Wong), Phil LaMarr (Hermes Conrad), and David Herman (Scruffy the Janitor) are slated for a comeback.
For eagle-eyed folks who may have spotted that the list may be missing someone important, John DiMaggio—who voiced the foul-mouthed robot Bender—isn’t currently attached to the project, although reports say that he’s “finalizing a deal to return.”
“Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it,” the actor updated on Twitter. “Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT! #bendergate”
Aside from being the source of many, many memes, “Futurama” gained cult status with its satiric take of a distant future. After accidentally getting cryogenically frozen, a 25-year-old pizza delivery guy named Fry wakes up 1,000 years into the future. He sets out to find his only descendant, an elderly scientist, whose rag-tag crew members recruit him into their fold (hence, chaos).
The reboot’s production is set to start this month, with a potential 2023 premiere. Someone freeze me till then.
