A free ‘The Kingmaker’ screening and roundtable are happening this weekend

As the son of a late dictator vies for the highest position in the country, it’s only essential to review history. But if you still end up getting shut off by that fanatic acquaintance or a distant relative when you try to start a conversation, maybe here’s an event you can invite them to instead.

Lauren Greenfield’s documentary “The Kingmaker” is, once again, free for streaming, Active Vista revealed in a Facebook post. Co-organized with the UP Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority Manila and Dakila, this virtual screening happening on Nov. 27 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. via Zoom will also come with a roundtable discussion. “This film helps in countering misinformation and historical distortion on one of the crucial period[s] in our history, the Martial Law era,” Sigma Alpha Nu Sorority said in a Facebook post. “As the 2022 election draws closer, this opportunity will encourage a free exchange of ideas that will help voters further understand Philippine history.”

The 2019 film examines the controversial and opulent life of former first lady Imelda Marcos, wife of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and how their family attempts to regain power in politics especially through her son, Bongbong Marcos. I bet you’ve seen the stills, too—this is where you’ll hear Imelda say, “Perception is real, and the truth is not.”
