For SB19’s path into the P-pop’s ’verse, it’s only a constant rise from here on out. But it’ll come with some experimentation—take their newest single “What?” for example.
For anyone who has already tuned into their comeback single and its accompanying visuals, this much is obvious: “What?” is a detour from SB19’s usual shtick. It’s assertive, it’s in-your-face and it isn’t quite the poppy, glitzy tracks like the ghost of the group’s past (that’s their debut record “Get in The Zone”). The boys seem to agree.
“This one has a more aggressive take to it compared to our previous songs, so I really had to force out the ‘oomph’ in the voices of the members,” says main rapper and lead vocalist Pablo, who’s one of the songwriters and producers behind “What?” “I was really meticulous with the recordings, but so were they. That’s why we would record ’til morning and until everyone was satisfied with their parts. The feeling had to be there.”
“As SB19 and as individuals, we know that we’re not the best at everything, but that shouldn’t stop us from what we want to achieve.”
The heavy visuals for “What?” complement its lyrics, which speak of empowerment and self-love amid whatever chaos, while SB19 traverses a post-apocalyptic world as its main characters.
For the P-pop group, this is one way to prove that they aren’t just in the scene to “play games.” “A lot of people still doubt us, denouncing everything that we do and everything that we’re trying to achieve,” Pablo says. “Each of us has our own flag. We should be proud of it and raise it as much as we can. As SB19 and as individuals, we know that we’re not the best at everything, but that shouldn’t stop us from what we want to achieve.”
“What?” is just a quick peek of what’s to come for SB19. Until then, we have the music video to play on repeat. Watch it below.
