Netflix has a new feature for you, homebodies-slash-binge-watchers.
The content platform will finally introduce its “shuffle play” feature this year as a way to randomize and discover new content for your next watchlist ℅ algorithms (or, if you simply don’t know what to watch). Sounds like another idea to fuck up our sleep schedule, amirite?
The decision came about when Netflix reached a new milestone: 200 million subscribers worldwide. “It appears business is looking good for the streaming giant as its recent public statement emphasizes that it may now be big enough to operate independently, without any external financing on the day-to-day business,” Hypebeast reports.
In a Variety article, Netflix details that “when you hit the “Play Something”/”Shuffle Play” button, you’d get either shows or movies similar to ones you’ve watched previously; titles in genres you’ve viewed, or content you have saved in the “My List” section.”
As more and more people are staying indoors, streaming movies and series has been the go-to chillout activity for some. And what better way than to let the algorithms decide if you constantly just stare or scroll blankly on Netflix’s landing page for a minute with no particular movie or genre in mind.
Netflix has tested a similar feature back in 2019 and 2020. It has not disclosed the official release date, but hopefully it rolls out pretty soon.
