Finally, some fucking good news from the folk at Studio Ghibli.
Japan’s iconic animation house is dropping a new film before the year ends. On Jun. 4, Studio Ghibli fans were excited to learn about “Aya to Majo” (Earwig and the Witch), which is the studio’s first attempt at 3D animation after decades of perfecting hand-drawn animated films.
The project is a collab between Hayao Miyazaki and his son Goro. Set in ’90s England, “Aya to Majo” follows an orphan who gets adopted by a strange couple and eventually gets pulled into their world of magic and mystery.
Fun fact: “Aya to Majo” was supposed to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this year but has since been delayed due to COVID-19. No need to be bummed though. It will still air this year at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).
Folk in Japan will have the pleasure to watch it live on Dec. 30. As for its North American fans, expect the movie to roll out in early 2021. We still don’t have news on its global 2021 release though.
While we wait for its worldwide drop, we can swoon over the trailer below:
