If Erik Matti flicks are up your alley, then here’s something for you: a horror episode from an HBO series that Erik himself directed.
HBO Asia recently confirmed that the filmmaker will direct an episode of “Folklore”’s second season. Created by Singaporean director Eric Khoo, the HBO series centers on Asian myths and superstitions. While the “Folklore” anthology had a mix of spooky stories from this side of the world, season two will herald the first time a Filipino tale is featured on the show.
There aren’t many deets on Matti’s “Folklore” directorial debut yet but expect a fusion of Filipino supernatural themes and twisted, horror tropes. HBO Asia reached out to the director to “ramp up the fear factor” for stories that “examine the human condition when exposed to supernatural powers.” That, and because his IMDB list kind of proves he’s up for the job, if we count 2016’s “Seklusyon” and 2019’s “Kuwaresma.”
Matti is one of the many directors that HBO tapped for the project, which includes filmmakers from countries like Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. According to WarnerMedia, filming will start early next year.
“The horror genre has always worked well in Asia,” says Magdalene Dew, WarnerMedia India’s head of entertainment. “‘Folklore’ season two will feature a mix of established and up-and-coming auteurs, each with distinct sensibilities, including two female directors from the region.”
