I, too, would love to track my cheating husband with Bill Murray

It’s been a while since I thought of Sofia Coppola.

As a film student, watching flicks like “Virgin Suicides,” “Lost in Translation” and even “Marie Antoinette” was a rite of passage. But I didn’t see her last film “The Bling Ring” that way at all (I did love “A Very Murray Christmas,” though). I felt a huge disconnect with it ’cause I’m not a trust fund kid stealing from other rich celebs just for the thrill of it.

So when I saw that she’s making a new film with Bill Murray and Rashida Jones, I didn’t think too much of it. I wasn’t even that excited.

And then its trailer proved me wrong.

A24’s first venture with Apple TV+ is Coppola’s newest film. “On the Rocks” is a father-daughter dramedy that’s all about failing relationships and how our parents contribute to our subsequent perspective on them. According to IndieWire, its premise is as follows: “a young New York mother faced with sudden doubts about her marriage [who] teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father to tail her husband.”

It sounds promising. Yet what’s more encouraging is that it’s an endearing film between father and daughter relationships, which we don’t see a lot of in media. That, and it also seems to address our paternal figures’ problematic behavior around women and how we carry that within us as we grow older. It’s a lot of rather heavy themes packaged in a slice-of-life film. Plus, we get to hear a new track from Phoenix.

Are you the target demographic for this film? I don’t know about y’all, but my daddy issues say that I am.
