What’s scarier than your bias reading your fanfic about them? Hackers from the deep web owning your account.
Last month, the website haveibeenpwned.com revealed that Wattpad suffered a huge data breach, e over 270 million user records. “The data was initially sold then published on a public hacking forum where it was broadly shared,” read the site. “The incident exposed extensive personal information including names and usernames, email and IP addresses, genders, birth dates and passwords stored as bcrypt hashes.”
This data breach might’ve happened in June. But it’s only now that Wattpad users learning about it on Twitter.
Of course, a lot of us are fearing for our personal safety. It’s just weird to imagine these hackers lurking over fanfics that fans wrote. Sure, they’re after our information (who isn’t these days?). But… did they read our x reader fics as well? We need answers.
This might be 2020’s version of our parents reading our browser history. If you want your private data protected, this helpful Twitter thread might be of service to you. It’s also best to remove your email from public searchability.
Until we get our data back, I hope these hackers love reading smut and y/n fics.
