UPDATE: The Vimeo link for “Walang Rape sa Bontok” has been taken down. The documentary will be part of DaangDokyu Festival’s online lineup on Oct. 23 to 29.
With discussions on rape culture making waves over the weekend, it’s high time folks are educated about how this thinking plagues our society. For starters, documentaries like 2014’s “Walang Rape sa Bontok” explore this very notion—and now, you can stream it for free.
Directed by Lester Valle, “Walang Rape sa Bontok” begins the conversation with two Filipinas, both victims of sexual abuse in varying degrees. In a world where women’s oppression seems to pervade most corners, they set out to search for a utopian rape-less society. Studies say they might find it in the Bontok of the Cordilleras, where a community lived for eras without an incident—or concept—of rape.
As part of the Lockdown Cinema Club initiative, the Habi Collective and the Concerned Artists of the Philippines are making the documentary free for streaming on Vimeo. Plus, they’re also holding a donation drive for the benefit of the Lumad Bakwit School—you can check out the details here on how you can help.
