Lately, my music library has almost nothing new. It’s not that I’m picky or my friends don’t send me regular recs. It’s just that I find myself listening to old—and I mean old—tracks that I haven’t listened to for quite a long time. Think MTV regulars and after-school MYX hits. I almost didn’t want to admit this. But Spotify just said: “WBK.”
In Spotify’s latest report sent to us through email, they revealed their users’ listening habits this quarantine. From Apr. 17 to May 17, the app found out that users are making soundtracks of usual activities like cleaning, painting, gardening, taking online classes and of course, dyeing our hair. From all the popular tracks, we see how the 2000s era reign supreme. Guess we’re not alone after all?
The app saw Miley Cyrus’ “Party In The USA,” Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” in cleaning up playlists; while tracks that inspire people during their hair care regimens are Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” and Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down.”
For some reason, people have also been glued to classical track “Für Elise” while surviving their daily WFH shifts. Baking playlists are also pretty straightforward, with songs like “Watermelon Sugar,” “Sugar” and “Banana Pancakes.” Of course, 1994 hit “No Scrubs” stays in every cleaning up playlist. Spotify might have exposed us, but we’re not changing our songs anytime soon.
Still from “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down”
