Kip Oebanda’s “Bar Boys” is free on Youtube right now

Yesterday, Luzon officially began its indefinite lockdown. All of our daily routines have been turned upside down by this virus. Most of our worries lie on how COVID-19 will affect us a month from now, some of our worries though are more tedious, like solving mundanity amidst a region lockdown.

Good thing Filipino filmmakers are doing their part to elevate this mundanity. First, it’s TBA Studios and Cinema One streaming some of their original films for free on Youtube. Now, director Kip Oebanda (“Liway”) joins this effort.

With the consent of fellow creators and studio executives, Oebanda started uploading his 2017 dramedy film “Bar Boys” on Youtube last night. His reason for doing this is simple: “Hopefully, [it will] help with the boredom of staying at home while on community quarantine. Stay safe, everyone!”

Oebanda describes “Bar Boys” as a love story, seeing friendship as a form of love. The film tells the story of a group of friends entering law school together. Their bond is tested through the ups and downs, struggles, and laughs shared throughout the law school experience. It stars Carlo Aquino, Kean Cipriano, Rocco Nacino, and Enzo Pineda.

“Bar Boys” received positive reviews upon its screening. It’s a coming-of-age film appealing to all college kids, whether you’re a law student or not. Cinemabravo describes it as “[stirring] both humor and curiosity in bringing forth the works of a courtroom drama in a behind-the-scenes black comedy.”
