In these times of tribulation and paranoia, misinformation on the coronavirus pops up in alarming numbers—be it from chain mail, the occasional meme, and hoaxes that stir the pot for public panic. Fortunately, the World Health Organization (WHO) has hatched a plan to educate internet users (such as Gen Zers) through the most efficient way possible: TikTok.
To counter the fake COVID-19 advice making rounds on the app, WHO has introduced an official account that offers information straight from the experts. “We are joining @tiktok to provide you with reliable and timely public health advice,” reads the caption of WHO’s first TikTok video. “Our first post: How to protect yourself from the #coronavirus.”
The video features WHO’s technical lead of infection prevention and control, Benedetta Allegranzi. In the post, she advises washing hands frequently, coughing and sneezing into elbows or into a tissue to be discarded immediately. She also recommends avoiding close contact with anyone who has a fever or a cough, as well as to visit a doctor if you’re showing flu-like symptoms. In a later video, the organization clarifies that a medical mask isn’t necessary if you don’t show these signs. However, if you do opt for one, Dr. April Baller of WHO demonstrates how to wear it properly (the white part should be inside, folks.)
