Gorillaz is back with “Song Machine” and we have no idea what it is

Everyone’s favorite virtual band is cooking something up in the studio. Wait, or are they? We’re a little murky with the complete details. But it looks like an upcoming Gorillaz’s project is coming sooner than we think.

Today, Gorillaz uploaded a fun little teaser across their social media accounts.  It’s a brief 20-second animated clip with a ’70s public access title screen aesthetic, mixed in with the band’s illustrator Jamie Helwitt’s loud, out-of-the-box art style. Apparently, this is a premise for a larger project called “Gorillaz presents Song Machine.”

Their Instagram caption reads: “The Machine is on.” And we don’t have the faintest idea on what it could mean. Is it an album? A single? An actual, physical song machine? Everything will be revealed this Jan. 30 on BBC Radio 1.

According to
Hypebeast, the virtual band will debut a single alongside rapper slowthai and post-hardcore band Slaves. Prior to this, they released a documentary before the decade ended called “Reject False Icons” following the release of their two albums “The Now Now” and “Humanz.”

As a long-time Gorillaz fan, “Song Machine” could be anything they want it to be. I’m just glad they’re consistent on fresh drops and new projects. There was a time where they released nothing at all after their third studio album “Plastic Beach.” And sweetie, I don’t plan to go back to the dark ages.
