The Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-SEI) has opened the call for entries for “Indie Siyensya,” its annual science filmmaking competition. This year’s theme is “Communities Beyond the Naked Eye,” which focuses on the connectivity all sorts of communities on multiple scales.
Indie Siyensya aims to, “hone the skills of young filmmakers in documenting research and [to] challenge them to think of new ideas to present science to the youth in a bid to entice them to get into STEM careers in the future.” That being said, film really is a universal language across all cultures and, as Indie Siyensya suggests, all disciplines as well.
There are two main categories for interested applicants: The “Youth Category” for high school, tertiary school and out-of-school youth aged 13-20 and “Open category” for science professionals working with amateur or professional filmmakers. The prize for best film is P100,000 and the criteria for judging largely prioritizes the scientific content of the piece. If this is up your alley (or if you enjoy a good challenge), then good news ahead because the call for entries have been extended until Jan. 27, 2020.
