IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OPPO PHILIPPINES
We’re halfway through December, knee-deep into parties and shuffling through what our old stack of CDs have to offer. Aside from the mandatory Mariah Carey hits and Regina George-approved “Jingle Bell Rock,” we’re looking back at the last decade’s yuletide cheer, with whatever genre’s up your alley. From hip-hop drops to punk rock tracks, here are the albums to blast on your next party—holiday spirit included.
INDIE FOLK
“A Very She & Him Christmas” by She & Him (2011)
Tune in to the early 2010s, when Zooey Deschanel was indie music’s darling and bluesy vocals were all the rage. 2011’s “A Very She & Him Christmas” offers the classic Christmas tracks ingrained in everyone’s minds, now with an indie folk take. With “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” to their rendition of the infamous “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” play this on the backdrop of your chillest Christmas get-together—and throw in some hot chocolate for good measure.
ELECTROPOP
“Everyday is Christmas” by Sia (2017)
If your Christmas album’s played on a month other than December, then consider it a success. Cult-favorite “Everyday is Christmas” is everything you’d expect from a Sia holiday record–with sock hop vibes fused with late 2010s electropop. Take the track “Ho Ho Ho” for a spin. It’s your typical adult, devil-may-care party anthem, summed up in one sentence: “Chandelier,” but make it Christmas.
HIP-HOP
“East Atlanta Santa” (2014) and “The Return of East Atlanta Santa” by Gucci Mane (2016)
Holiday hip-hop may sound like the oddest mix yet, but that doesn’t stop rappers from dropping us a couple of beats. Gucci Mane takes on the role of your favorite gift-giver in “East Atlanta Santa,” followed up by a 2016 sequel. Expect some familiar voices, with collabs including Drake and Travis Scott. Both records flip the script in Christmas conventions, tongue-in-cheek lyrics with that hip-hop grit.
POP
“Under the Mistletoe” by Justin Bieber (2011)
Don’t come at us with the pitchforks just yet—we know this one’s divisive. “Mistletoe” was stuck in our heads right in the wake of “Baby,” but the Biebs was relentless, so much so that the track has become a modern holiday staple. If you’d rather skip out on “Mistletoe,” take your chance with “All I Want Is You,” an apologetic ballad for year-round play (just ignore the sleigh bells).
ROCK
“Christmas Songs” by Bad Religion (2013)
There’s no silent night in sight with Bad Religion. For those who want a punk rock punch in their holiday cheer, the band reimagines choir pieces like “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’’ and “O Come All Ye Faithful.” We don’t recommend playing this with your lola in the room, but it’s sure to distract her from the usual interrogation on your love life.
