Whether you loved or hated ‘Love, Simon,’ Disney’s still turning it into a TV series

Fresh from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney wants to turn the 2018 (read: 20-gayteen) coming-of-age movie Love Simon into a TV series through Disney+, the company’s new streaming platform. This decision was apparently made after Disney bought Fox assets for $71.3 billion, which included the rights for the Fox 2000-produced movie. Greg Berlanti, who directed the film and is now behind The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will return as executive producer. However, there is no news yet if Nick Robinson will reprise his role as Simon Spier.

This is probably good news for the fans of the movie. However, Out expresses that “Disney hasn’t had the best track record when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation.” The queer magazine cites the “exclusively gay moment” Disney promised in the live adaptation Beauty and the Beast. The said scene appeared to be too small that you’d miss it when you blink. But hey, things change, right? Disney even had their first coming out scene earlier this year.

Love, Simon has been criticized for the racial and social privilege of its closeted protagonist. But with the luxury of time the TV format offers, there are more opportunities to tackle the struggles of young closeted queer individuals thoroughly.

So fingers crossed for this one, yeah?
