Aubrey Plaza’s new movie is a dark take on Instagram culture

Aubrey Plaza’s been on a roll this year. Earlier in 2017, she portrayed a sinful, medieval nun in The Little Hours, and now she’s taking on the character of a social media crazed and mentally disturbed woman in the new comedy-drama, Ingrid Goes West.

The film revolves around Aubrey’s Ingrid, whose new obsession on Instagram is a social media influencer named Taylor (played by Elizabeth Olsen). Ingrid goes all the way to Los Angeles to stalk Taylor, eventually becoming her friend and getting sucked into the world of Instagram personalities and influencers.

The plot resonates too well with Filipinos, who are known to be the most prominent social media users in the whole world. Influencer and blogger culture happen to be a big deal here in Manila as well. And no doubt, every industry’s got a dark side.
