‘Wonder Woman’ looks like it’s about to break the DC movie curse

It goes without saying, but we’ll say it anyway: there is a lot riding on DC’s Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins. For one thing, it’s the first female-led superhero movie since Marvel’s Elektra back in 2005 (and a Wonder Woman movie has been a long time coming), and you know all about how the latest string of DC blockbusters have mostly been bland at best.

So it should come as a relief to see that early reviews are coming in, and they’re rating Wonder Woman well. They’re even going so far as to call it the “best DC movie since The Dark Knight,” which is the tallest of orders, because you remember how great TDK was. And it’s easy to say that this could be just fluff coming in, but DC was apparently confident enough to lift their review embargo a couple of weeks early.

This relief comes after not only the shaky standing the DC Extended Universe has after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad (and to an extent, Man of Steel) were not the hits they were supposed to be, as well as rumors claiming the Justice League movie out later this year allegedly underwent and is undergoing reshoots.

If you’re a comic fan, especially a DC fan, it’s hard to not feel pessimistic about their movies, considering how much interference Suicide Squad went through. The consensus for a while has been that the DC properties on TV (that is to say, the Arrowverse on the CW comprising of ArrowThe FlashSupergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) have been more superior than the DCEU for doing more with less. The DC movies are still struggling to find and establish their particular niche in the superhero movie scene, trying to be the dark, gritty, and modern films as opposed to Marvel’s lighter, more traditional comic fare.

Needless to say, after all this positive buzz, we’re pretty excited to see Wonder Woman in a couple of weeks. Here’s hoping it truly is miles better than Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2.
